Yung100 is longtime collaborators Jay Bodley – aka genre-hopping electronic music veteran Sun Hammer – and Andrew Weathers, the brain behind Oakland-based tape label Full Spectrum. After initially bonding over their mutual dedication to experimental electronics and future-forward drone music, they later discovered a profound shared fascination with pop music and hip-hop. After performing together in their home towns, Weathers and Bodley finally decided to cut the talk and try their collective hand at something fresh: enter, Yung100.
More than your generic “experimental drone-bros explore song form” project, Yung100 is almost like a homecoming for these artists. Bodley cut his teeth early on in his career producing instrumentals for the Michigan underground rap crew Abolitionists and collaborating with renowned beat alchemist Shigeto. Weathers, on the other hand, has always had a foot in song craft, starting out playing in hardcore bands in central North Carolina before adapting traditional American folk songs to his unique aesthetic after relocating to Oakland, California a few years back.
The end result is a set of breezy jams that take cues from both artists’ full-time projects while hinting at a wider aesthetic heretofore unexplored by either. Bolstered by guest verses by Greenova South (Main Attraktionz affiliate Squadda B & Arkansas legend Pepperboy), Intricate Dialect and More Eaze, the album becomes a bridge between starched collar avant-garde and mix-tape culture; but at its core, this is the sound of two producers learning to give fewer fucks and follow their muse.
Yung100 makes summer bangers for your third eye. Stay woke, fam.
